Rural Valley Cemetery was incorporated in 1867 under the Cemetery Laws of New York. It is regulated by the NYS Division of Cemeteries. Through the hard work of the board of trustees, including Harold Case, Arthur Hoag, George Lang, Frank Cuddeback, Wendell Myers, William Lang, and Casper Jaggie, the cemetery was granted tax exempt status under Internal Revenue Code Section 501(c) (13) on September 13,1982. As such, donations to the cemetery, except for payments made as part of the purchase price of a burial lot or earmarked for the care of a particular lot, are deductible on the donor’s federal income tax return. The cemetery is required to file IRS Form 990 annually and a copy of the filing is available upon request.
The cemetery has a long and storied history in the community with internments of founding members and families of the hamlet including Cuddeback, VanInwegen, Case, and other Dutch Huguenots that settled the area. We are honored to be the final resting place of veterans of all conflicts dating back to the Revolutionary War. Benjamin Eaton, who served as George Washington’s Life Guard in interned at Rural Valley and has a NYS Historical Marker at the entrance to the cemetery. The cemetery is bordered on two sides by the D&H Canal.
On behalf of the generosity of one of the RVCA families, a fund has been established with the Community Foundation of Orange and Sullivan to provide for maintenance of the cemetery. The Rural Valley Cemetery Association Maintenance Fund accepts donations that will assist in capital and general maintenance projects.
